JESUS AT THE TEMPLE

JESUS AT THE TEMPLE AS A BOY

PK1 (Y1)

WELCOME TO WEEK 1

This week we are learning that Jesus is unusual, which means he was different from you and me. We will learn what it means to be different and stand out in an unusual way, for God!

BIBLE STORY

Gather 3 items to show your child. Have 2 items that are similar and 1 item that is different. Ask Which of these items is different, or set apart?  Repeat this activity with other groups of items. Then say Jesus was different from the other children his age because God set him apart for something special. God has set us apart as well. Sometimes following Jesus can make us feel set apart as well. It can make us feel different, but we can walk an unusual life with Jesus.

Materials: Variety of items from around the house to compare, Bible

Let’s read or listen to the Bible story for this week. Luke 2:41-52

Where was Jesus and his family going? (To Jerusalem to celebrate Passover)

How many days did Jesus parents travel before they realized he wasn’t with them? (a day)

Where did they find Jesus? (In the temple teaching the synagogue leaders)

We learn from this story that Jesus was not a normal boy but Jesus was special because he was doing what God asked of him.

BIBLE STORY ACTIVITY

Jesus was not like other kids his age, because Jesus is God. Jesus had a different way of doing things and saw things differently from other kids his age. Let’s do a usual activity in a different way.

ACTIVITY

Shoeboxes usually hold our shoes, but can you find a different use for a shoebox? For example, use a shoe box to store small toys, draw a 3D picture inside the shoebox, or use the shoebox to make a puppet show.

Materials: Shoebox, Paper, Glue, Scissors, Crafting items to make puppet show

ALTERNATIVE:

Set up an obstacle course in your house or outside. Go through your obstacle course going forward, then do it in a different way such as backwards,  with your eyes closed, or while holding hands with a partner.

Materials: Items to make an obstacle course, Blindfold (optional)

CREATE:

Try coloring a picture with your non-dominate hand or play a game of memory turning over 3 cards at once.

Materials: White sheet of paper, Crayons and coloring utensils, Game of Memory

Practical Application at Home

Jesus was not like other boys running and playing, but instead doing his Fathers work of preaching.  We are called to obey God even when it seems very different to others around us. This week look for ways to follow God even when it seems out of the ordinary. Here are a few examples:

1. Jesus says feed the hungry, care for the sick and clothe those in need. Find a way to help someone in need like giving someone who is hungry a little snack you have in the car. Looking for clothes you don't wear or need and donate them to someone in need. Visit your local nursing home and visit with a grandma or grandpa who doesn't have any grandchildren. Take a picture or art project to share with them.

2. Share with a friend at school or church.

3. Befriend the student in class or school that doesn’t seem to have very many friends.
