WELCOME TO WEEK 2
This week we will learn that Jesus is God. Jesus is not like you and me because He is God! God had a special plan for Jesus just like he has a special plan for each one of our lives as well. Let’s see how God showed that Jesus was unusual and set apart for something special.
BIBLE STORY
Jesus is special, not like anyone else. Jesus was different because Jesus is God. When Jesus was baptized it was unlike any other baptism because Jesus was unusual, he is God. Jesus made each one of us different as well, let’s see one way God made each one of us different.
Take a fingerprint of each of your fingers and compare them to each other as well as to a family members. Notice each one is unique and different, just like Jesus is different.
Materials: Ink pad or washable markers, Sheet of white paper, Bible
Read the Bible story for the week Matthew 3:11-17
What did Jesus go to the river to do? (become baptized)
Who did he ask to baptize him? (his cousin John the Baptist)
Why did John want to baptize Jesus? (John knew that Jesus was the messiah and the Jesus should be baptizing him)
What 2 things happened after Jesus was baptized? (A dove flew from the sky and God spoke and said “This is my son with whom I am well pleased”)
How do you think the other people who were nearby felt when they saw and heard this? (that this was a special baptism and he is different from others and must be the Son of God)
BIBLE STORY ACTIVITY
Today we learned about a time when Jesus was in the water and something “unusual” happened. God showed that Jesus was unusual by sending a dove and speaking after Jesus was baptized.
Do one or more of the following activities.
ACTIVITY
Make a puppet by cutting a slit in the bottom of a plastic or styrofoam cup. Draw a picture of Jesus or use a Jesus sticker anyplace it on a craft stick (popsicle stick). Child can color the cup blue or wrap it in blue construction paper. Place the stick in the slit of the cup and move it up and down. Now your puppet shows Jesus being baptized in the water. See this picture as an example.
Materials: Plastic or styrofoam cup, Makers/Crayons, Popsicle stick, Blue construction paper (optional), Picture of Jesus and a dove.
ALTERNATIVE:
Act out the story of Jesus being baptized. Create your own show retelling the story of Jesus being baptized. Give each member of your family a character to represent. Use household items to create your scenery such as a blue sheet or cloth for the water, a bird stuffed animal or draw a large bird on white paper and attach it to a craft stick. Retell the story as the characters demonstrate their parts.
Materials: Blue sheet or cloth, Stuffed bird, other props
CREATE:
Divide a piece of paper in half by drawing a line down the middle. On the left side, draw a picture of your favorite place to swim. On the right side, draw a picture of swimming while their eyes closed. Describe how the left side was a not normal way to draw a picture.
Materials: White sheet of paper, Crayons or markers
DOWNLOADABLE ACTIVITY:
ARTS & CAFTS
CRAFT 1
Jesus is baptized spinner.

Cut slits along both lines at the bottom of the cloud page and place the ends of the water through each slit. Fold back the pieces from the water and tape to the back of the paper.
Materials: Picture printout, Scissors, Metal brads, Tape
CRAFT 3
Coloring page. One way to print this page is to download and then print. (The small circle with 3 small dots allows you to download the copy.)
Materials: Coloring page printout, Crayons
FOLLOW-UP
What made Jesus’ baptism special?
What did God say after Jesus was baptized?
What was the special sign God sent after Jesus stood out of the water?
Practical Application at Home
Jesus was baptized and something special happened, God spoke and a dove from heaven flew down. God shows us that we are special and that He loves each one of us as well. Psalm 139 says that God created us and knit us before we were in our mothers womb. That means God had a special plan in mind for each one of us before we were born! That is amazing! God loves us and made us exactly how we were meant to be, He didn’t make any mistakes. Jesus was special because He is God and since we belong to Him he has made us special as well.
1. This week help your child think of ways God has made them special and ways they can use that for Him.
2. Try to find ways to help others feel special.
- Write a note to a friend who may be sad or lonely.
- Pick flowers for a neighbor or teacher.
- Draw a picture for a sick relative or friend.
- Leave a note that says, “Jesus Loves You,” for someone to find.
