The night of Jesus’ birth was unremarkable to everyone in the world except Mary, Joseph, and eventually the shepherds. The parents of Jesus were far from home probably feeling emotionally isolated, a predicament shared by so many this last year. The census represented a political reckoning for the Roman Empire that in a sense parallels our election season. Lots of things were up in the air, and yet in the middle of it God was at work. ADVENT-ISH: HIS-story is WONDER-ful and AWE-some
”Advent” is defined as the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event. And it certainly can be said among people of faith, that all of human history has centered on the arrival of Christ Jesus. For Christ-followers, advent is the epicenter of their story, the focus of their journey. However, along the way, in the waiting and the wandering, have we found ourselves fading in our anticipation, wonder and awe?

This weekend’s host is Lisa Brandreth. She is the founder of Broken to Beautiful. Here, she aspires to help others find healing from their own wounds through sharing her story.
“As a young woman who lost her father at an early age, and later experienced life with an emotionally abusive stepfather, I have experience in the hurt, brokenness, and scars that come from a life without my dad.”
Lisa believes we all have hurt but go through life keeping it to ourselves and because of this, we end up feeling alone. Broken to Beautiful is a place where your pain can become your power.
She also serves as a worship leader at Younger Generation Church and is a current International student from South Africa majoring in Business Information Systems with Consultative Selling at Texas Christian University.

ADVENT IN A BAG: A FAMILY EXPERIENCE
Often we think of Advent as the church season of waiting - because it feels like we have to wait so long for Christmas to get here. However, the word Advent actually means coming. We are getting ready to remember Jesus coming in the form of a baby, we are praying for more of God’s presence with us each day and we are waiting and preparing for Jesus to one day come again.
How do you celebrate Advent as a family?
Thanks to FORM Kids, one way is through a program we're calling "Advent in a Bag." This is a collection of interactive activities and devotions that intentionally include Jesus in your Christmas preparations and celebration. Be sure to pick up your family's bag from the church lobby and enjoy four weeks of Christmas related devotional activities with your family. Happy Advent!
If your child attends Burton Academy, we'll deliver a bag for your family to the school. If you can't make it to the church to get yours, let us know and we'll do our best to deliver one to you. We're excited to celebrate Jesus together this year!

FIRST ADVENT
With all the signs pointing towards this event, it would stand to reason, "You can't miss it." But as His story reveals, unless you focus in to find Him, you, like the whole world, can miss the humble arrival of the newborn King.
8 There were shepherds living out in the fields nearby. It was night, and they were taking care of their sheep. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them. And the glory of the Lord shone around them. They were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news. It will bring great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you. He is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 Here is how you will know I am telling you the truth. You will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a large group of angels from heaven also appeared. They were praising God. Ashten and Trent Fleming invite us once again to have prepared bags to assist the homeless not only during the holiday season, but throughout the year. Although both men and women experience homelessness, women are at particular risk. Find below a checklist to help you assemble a bag or several bags to have available in your car.
The items listed are suggestions for what to place in the blessing bag. Customize your bag, knowing you can put more or less of the checklist items. If you don’t have a handbag or tote to use, you can always use gallon or quart size, clear, ziplock bags. Thanks for being the best neighbors!
