“My name is Ruben Najera, I was raised in California but came to Texas as fast as I could. I am happily married and have 4 wonderful kids. I have a huge passion for ministry, especially working with the youth. I am a student at Southwestern University currently working on my last year of theological studies. AdventHealth is pleased to announce that applications to our Leadership Internship and Leadership Residency Programs are now open!
The AdventHealth Leadership Internship is an 11-week internship experience that will help interns learn about the exciting careers available in healthcare. The program allows interns to collaborate with various departments and teams, giving them a clearer understanding of their career interests post-graduation. Through our program, interns can gain meaningful insight into AdventHealth’s leadership operations as they work side-by-side with our leaders, observe organizational dynamics, participate in meetings and complete project assignments. The AdventHealth Leadership Internship is designed for college Juniors and Seniors who are interested in a dynamic career in healthcare.

BACK TO THE FUTURE
This is the 40th anniversary of a classic romantic-comedy that was a huge success in the 1980s and continues to have a pop culture following to this day: BACK TO THE FUTURE. But for me it pales in comparison to another romance that I had a chance to see in person.
In the 20th Century, Deirdre Rivera-Martin and I arrived to Forest Lake Academy as 14-year-old Freshman. Back in 1981, we didn't realize that we would be friends for over 45 years. At the time, I probably wouldn't have admitted that I had a secret crush on her. Also at the time, she would readily admit she had no interest in me other than being "just friends."
I was an ambitious and flirty teenager, but also cocky and self-assured. She had ZERO time for "that guy." I don't blame her, but I will admit that didn't stop me from admiring her from the "friend zone."
Come time for our FLA Senior Banquet, I didn't hesitate to take advantage of a small window of opportunity. I borrowed a bike from one of my dormitory friends and showed up at her doorstep to ask her to be my "date." I am so glad she said yes. But in humility I confess, she did yet see me as anything more than a banquet date because I had more maturing to do.
Mr. Rit Kunau shared with me a pin that had an embossed quote after a devastating Student Association election loss for me, "Press On, Nothing Takes the Place of Persistence." And in some comical and romantic ways, I would say that was my Dee Dee motto.
It wasn't until junior year at Southern Adventist University that we started dating. We arrived as a "couple" to our Forest Lake Academy Alumni Five Year Reunion; Much to the surprise of many.
So Forest Lake Academy holds a very special place in my heart, because there I met Dee Dee, who has been my classmate and friend for four and a half decades; I've been her boyfriend for thirty-eight years; and we've been married for over three decades.
Coming out for our Forest Lake Academy Alumni 40th Reunion was so very sweet on so many levels. It was heartwarming to see so many friends from those wonderful academy years. It was fun to reminisce, but also to enjoy where we are in life today; So many laughs but also so many sentimental/romanticized moments. For me, it was a "Back to the Future" moment. With my own version of the "flux capacitor," like Marty McFly, I got the girl. —Pastor Allan
